~Why A Siberian~

Healthy, Hardy, Huggable and Hypo-Allergenic....

The Siberian cat, the national cat of Russia, is one of the three breeds of 'Forest' cats. Believed to be one of the oldest "natural" breeds of cats, the Siberian has a very long history indeed, first appearing in recorded history in the year 1000 AD. Although no one knows the exact time and place of origin of these magnificent cats that populated Russia for years, it is hardly disputable that Siberians have ancient origins. Able to withstand the unforgiving conditions of their native homeland, Siberians have developed into a healthy & hardy breed.

Siberians, one of the largest domestic breeds, present themselves as a substantial, strong and powerfully built cat. Well-muscled and athletic their strong hindquarters make for an exceptionally agile jumper. A delightful combination of power and grace. Female cats average 8-13 lbs, males average 10-17 lbs, with some being larger. Siberians, a slow maturing breed, can take up to as long as 5 years to reach full maturity.

The coat is the Siberians crowning glory...Semi-long haired with a triple coat, including a dense soft undercoat, and an outercoat of thick, shiny "guard hairs" which gives the coat a water-resilient quality. Their first full adult coat, usually coming in the winter after their first birthday, includes a beautiful ruff setting off their impressive heads and beautiful "lynx tips" on their ears which helps to give them their wild appearance. Easily groomed they are not known for excessive shedding, except for a very short shedding period, nor does their fur mat easily. As a Kitten, quick & gentle comb outs of your Siberian, with a steel comb, will act as a bonding experience as Kittens will soon associate this as affection & quality time.

Siberians possess 'dog like' devotion attributes, such as being loyal, confident, affectionate, playful and intelligent. These admiral qualities, making them a wonderful choice for those that are looking for close companionship or for Families with children. Their problem solving abilities are uncanny and entertaining. Siberians also adjust well to other pets, loving liasons between our Siberians and Great Danes a testament to this. They, also, have a fascination for water...A dripping faucet able to provide hours of entertainment.

When it comes to a Siberian Cat's level of desirability, among pet owners and cat allergy sufferers, Siberians have an ace in the hole: Their hypo-allergenic qualities....

A number of different allergens have been identified in cats, but only one of these, called "Fel d1" (Feline domesticus allergen 1), is specific to cats alone. The Fel d1 protein is created in the saliva, skin and anal glands of the cat. Being diligent groomers, cats transfer these proteins to the rest of their coats and, once dry, it easily becomes airborne. It is not, therefore, the cat's fur that you may be allergic to and hence long haired or short-haired and even hairless cats can all cause reactions in allergic individuals. Research shows Siberian Cats to produce some of the lowest levels of Fel d1, in the cat world.
